Final Web Project 4

We did it! Amber did a great job putting everything into Marvel, the program we chose to do instead of Invision after checking it out a bit more.

Final Web Project 3

Amber and myself have come pretty far from where we started with our idea. We want to make a website dedicated to telling people the advantages and benefits of drinking water and tea. Originally, we thought about going with this kind of color scheme:

While it as a nice color scheme, we realized that it didn't fit our webpage. I originally started off my half of our project with this kind of layout:

Honestly, this did not work out at all. I hated it haha. After talking with Amber, we both decided that the cream color we would keep. Since she was dealing with water, she would keep the cooler colors, but have them be pastel. Meanwhile, I took hold of warm, and earthy toned colors.

I decided to go with a desktop layout (shown on the left) that dealt with talking about the benefits of drinking tea, while on the other column would talk about how much you should drink along with how much to brew.

On the right is the version for mobile, that actually will be fixed.

these are two icons I created (along with the icons of tea representing the different reasons for drinking it) that go with how much you should drink, as well as what other ingredients you can add in order for tea to taste good. the two icons above are actually transparent, so that's why it's hard to see them with a white background behind them. But rest assured, they are full forms when on the website.

I will be working more on my things tonight for pre critique this Thursday.

Week 13A Overview

I think my days are starting to run together, but I don't really think there's too much to report. We finished our experimental type projects which I am so thankful for, and now we are working on our final web project!

My partner, Amber and I have been working steady, and independently. I don't think that's been a bad thing you know? We plan on working on the homepage together, while tackling our other pages separately. More info will come in the next few posts!

Experimenta Project Final

After finding out the problem with my original upload, I was able to get my video to be crunched more! I went from 4.7 GB to 110 some odd MB! I had to go through some things first. But I'm glad it worked out okay.

Here is the Youtube video!! Enjoy :D I am really happy with how this came out, and I am honestly proud of what I was able to create. I plan to enhance my video with the sall changes that need to be applied to make everything 100% since I had some small errors with the matching. While editting it over I seem to have accidentally moved things over or done the opacity settings weirdly in places I originally had them perfectly.

Here are some snapshots of the video:

I was able to accomplish both the graph and the world by using tutorials I got off of Youtube. The first one was just how to create a Sphere, while the second one was about how to create a moving graph.

This was where I used GIMP, and combined animal shots that I got off of the internet and incorporated them into a free "fake" photo template that I found.

This is where my hand drawn experimental type comes into play.

I was able to (with minor timing problems) pretend to create my shirt by over layering my file with a video I took with my phone. I also was able to create a radar, by using another tutorial off of youtube. The tutorial can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTxz8tD2kAI

This was just my combined design of a logo that I may use in the future, as well as my type.

before this last panel, I made sure to incorporate a little blurb about the project again, as well as I gave credit to Kevin MacLeod for all of my music put into the piece.

Experimental Project Progress 5

This weekend has certainly been a weekend! I decided to tone down my project just a little bit more, by just making it be about the t-shirt. Originally I had a kickstarter idea, but due to time limitations I've turned it into what I originally said I wanted to make- a t shirt that housed the idea of bringing awareness and hopeful chances of change in terms of endangered animals and their extinction. In doing so, my dialogue also changed just a little.

"For as long as we can remember, humans and animals have co existed with one another. In a perfect world, we can say we have lived alongside these beautiful creatures peacefully and without conflict. This however, is not the case. As of right now, over ten species of animals are already facing possible extinction- and the year is only 2015.

According to a recent study published in Nature, 41 percent of amphibians, 26 percent of mammals, and 13 percent of birds face extinction. Another study shows that in 300 years, 75 percent of mammal species will be gone. It has been stated that humans are creating a mass extinction on the same scale as previous cataclysmic events- with 30 percent of all species facing elimination over the next four decades.
At SilverMoon Studios, we have designed an alphabetical shirt, with each letter representing an animal that is currently facing extinction. Throughout the day, the letters on the shirt disappear. This is done through a computer chip located in the shirt, and is also determined by how many hours have passed. For example, two hours equates to forty years. Depending on the species, the forty years passed represent the animal’s timely demise. As the day passes, you will go from a shirt with all animals on it to none, before it resets itself and the cycle repeats.

The SilverMoon organization is dedicated to promoting saving the endangered species, and bring awareness to how serious the situation is. It should also be noted that while this shirt’s function is to take away its design, this shirt can obtained without the computer chip.
If you would like to contribute to this project, we are accepting funds at www.savethespecies.com. By creating this t-shirt, we hope to achieve awareness of this growing dilemma."

The final portions will be all text form, including things like "like us on facebook" and "share video" and so forth. I will also be sure to credit myself and Kevin MacLeod for being responsible for the audio.

Here are some more small snippets and portions of what I added to my piece and how I Went about it.

I put together a folder that housed a lot of mammal species, before using a photo template and incorporating each separate picture as its own "photograph" in GIMP. I then transferred the files into the AE file.

This was just my alphabet elaborated banner style, for purposes in the video to show that I had created letters from animal forms.

This is just an image logo filler I wanted to make for my "Silver Moon Studios" official 'group'. I may use this in the future for other things to be honest.

I have also been able to successfully incorporate video clips and put my alphabet to the test with pretending to be an actual t-shirt. I'm hopeful that my project will be good for tomorrow!

Final Web Project 2

Today has been a work day for us. We decided to go along with the color scheme:

And it works pretty well. So far I talked to Amber about the ideas of the home page. We both agreed that it will be the least informative and detailed compared to the two pages we are separately working on. We also have agreed that we will create a mobile template for our second part of the website final project.

This is the sketch so far that I created.

The top left is the homepage idea, while the top right is my idea for my separate page that will be dedicated to tea talk. The bottom right is for the potential "endless scroll" mobile template. Bottom left is just another continuation of my separate tea page, but it's not complete yet of what I want. I have an outline however of how I want to approach my page.

Week 12A Overview

Tuesday was an in-progress of our final experimental project. I can't say it was the greatest, actually it was pretty embarrassing- but I know I can get it done. I just need more time is all. Things are coming along together which is nice, and the feedback I have gotten so far has been fairly positive. I still have all my ideas in tact, it's just getting things together is all that I plan to dive into. I am no longer afraid of using After Effects, if anything its' actually really fun to use. And the tutorials I've been using have been really helpful.

Thursday was also a work day. Today was focused on both Experimental and our final Web Project. Other than that, nothing to report for the remainder of this week.

Experimental Project Progress 4

I do a lot better for some reason when on crunch time, I get a lot more focused. The project is due this Tuesday and I have more of my composition set. It is mostly just getting the time to get all the footage down honestly. I'll time everything in the end, just need the parts! Right now I have been able to collage animals together, in a "picture"-esque setting. What is going to happen is that as I explain how animals are currently becoming more endangered and extinct due to humans, the images of these mammals are going to slowly fade away until nothing exists, and in the background there will be the image of the globe.

I plan to complete this project over the weekend. I just need clips now from my alphabet that I have finished, and then a few more adjustments with my audio and only another snippet of my video clippings. Other than that it will be set!

Experimental Project Progress 3

Working over the weekend now and diving into After Effects, I had a shaky start but for the most part I am learning it pretty well! I'm not sure if I will be at 90% by Tuesday, depending on how my weekend ends up being because of having other things I have to work on and take care of- but I'm not as uncertain about it as I was beforehand. I have been using several tutorials found on youtube, and when I recorded myself I ended up sounding a lot more serious than intentional.. so what may happen is I will re record myself and try to sound a little bit peppier and hopeful in the second half of my pretend 'kickstarter / self awareness' video of having this idea potentially happen.

Here are some screen shots and also links to the tutorials I have used thus far:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0m4s19N89ZU : how to make a globe in After Effects

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iqriS-TrtA : how to create an animated bar graph in AE

I have also incorporated songs, free songs that can be used for projects, located at this website:

http://incompetech.com/

If you ever need free music for projects, Kevin MacLeod is the man to go to. He is seriously phenomenal.

This is also just my finished alphabet. I changed "A" a bit to match the rest of the alphabet. Now it's just including them in AE!

Here's the before when it was during first critque:

and here is the after, with the included letters that were not present beforehand:

Experimental Project Progress 2

Coming up with a writing prompt is really hard. I've also been avoiding After Effects. I need to get my butt moving. Hopefully I'm not writing too much- I plan to have several people read over my 'story' as it will be a potential fake KickStarter image prompt.

For as long as we can remember, humans and animals have co existed with one another.

We have created a shirt that consists of the alphabet- with each letter representing an animal that is facing current extinction. Within the shirt is a computer chip programmed to take away letters throughout the day. The way that these letters fade from the shirt are determined by the hours passed. For example, the Jaguar species currently holds between 100,00 and 200,000- which is only half of what it was in the 1960s compared to 2015 now. Estimating on the multiplication of 2, 2 hours can equate to 20 years. Depending on the species, the 20 years that pass can represent the animal’s timely demise.

So, While the shirt worn holds appeal in design, as time progresses more and more animals in the alphabet fade away. The elimination of species as the hours pass symbolizes the rate of losing these animals until the point where the shirt is blank. Within a day you will go from a shirt with all the animals to a shirt with none, before it resets itself and the cycle repeats.

The creation of this shirt is to promote saving the endangered species, and also create awareness that these animals need to be protected. All donations will be given to funds driven by the WWF. Imagine a world where we will no longer see animals. Elephants and Rhinoceroses are already facing ultimate extinction, and there is nothing we can do about it. While extinction for animals is a natural, common phenomenon, humans have increased the rate of extinction by 1,000. We hope to achieve awareness of this growing dilemna.

As class continued, I asked for some feedback with my written text. It will be efficient overall to verbally address my text, compared to having some text and some not. I will also be trying to provide infographic slides that correspond with my speaking in terms of rates and numbers. I was told that my first two paragraphs were really strong, and that I just needed to take my tone down a little and try to explain my idea easier for people to understand.

All donations will be given to funds organized by the WWF. Contributors will be given a t-shirt and small plush of a common, endangered animal of their choice.

It should also be noted that while this shirt’s function is to take away its design, patrons can obtain the shirt without the computer chip. We hope to achieve awareness of this growing dilemma.
This is what I added and also changed. Further below are more links to where I obtained my research and information in terms of statistics and numbers.

I also referenced KickStarter so that I could see just what people normally say in order to try and obtain patrons.

What I will probably end up doing is creating a fake KickStarter and incorporating it into my video.

Final Web Project

After deciding that we will be tackling the health benefits of drinking water and tea, we divided up the work with myself working on the Tea page, Amber tackling the Water page, and the two of us working on the Home page together.

This is all of the information that I have gathered, as well as the links provided for resources.

We have also decided we will be using the program, "Invision" as our final website publisher, compared to when we had used Webydo.

-----

USING INVISION

start with beginning quote and also picture. followed with text post before moving into actual stuff.

a lot of people say that tea is not good for you. people mistaken that tea causes you to become dehydrated. it also states that tea has caffeine in it and thus is not good for you. While it is true that tea has caffeine in it, it has less caffeine than coffee. A brewed, 8oz cup of coffee has between 95-200mg of caffeine. A brewed, 8oz cup of black tea has between 14-70mg.’

*move into why teas are good for you

--

types of teas and their ingredients*

*move into what kind of teas help ailments

--

how much you should drink daily and how long the tea should be brewed

--

end quote

------

INFORMATION RESEARCHED;

Quotes for possible openings of Tea:

  • potential starting quote for tea at top?

“A cup of tea would restore my normality.” - douglas adams
“I say let the world go to hell, but I should always have my tea.” - fyodor dostoyevsky

  • potential end quote at bottom of page?

“If you are cold, tea will warm you;
if you are heated, it will cool you;
if you are depressed, it will cheer you;
if you are excited, it will calm you.” - william ewart gladstone

things to add into tea:

citric fruits (sliced)
mints
honey
peppermint leaves
lavender
cinnamon

why teas are good for you:

contains antioxidants.
*key component is a group called flavonoids - helps prevent cell damage

has less caffeine.
reduces risk of heart attack and stroke
helps your immune system
protects your bones
increases metabolism
calorie-free

certain teas help certain illnesses:

colds / sore throat:
licorice teas

anxiety:
kava
passionflower
valerian root
chamomile
peppermint
lemon balm

6 healthy teas:
black
green
oolong
white

how much tea should you drink a day and why?
you should have at least three or four cups a day of tea. research has shown that having at least 3 cups of tea a day can cut the risk of heart attack by 11%

a cup of tea equates to about 4-6 fluid ounces. so a total of at least 16 - 24 fluid ounces should be had.

---

how long should tea be brewed?

it depends on the tea. some teas take about 3-5 minutes brewed, others take about 2-3. Some go for about 5-10 minutes.

with the information and everything, now it really is only a matter of putting everything together into an actual website.

Week 11A Overview

Tuesday 4/07/15 :

Today we figured out who is our partner for our final Web project. I've been paired with Amber and we are going to be doing our website on how it is beneficial for drinking both water and tea.

Our thesis statement is as follows:

"Drinking tea and water are two of the most essential beverages we can consume for beneficial health purposes."

---

we have chosen to use this color palette overall for our website, and right now we are just researching. I am going to be working on the Tea webpage and Amber will be working on the Water webpage, while we both will be working on the Homepage together.

Week 9A / 10A Overview

With all these projects and the HTML / CSS exercises I forgot to keep myself updated with the overview of class week! To be truthful, I can't remember everything that's happened these past weeks, mostly because some of the time we have not been in class on either Tuesday or Thursday due to illness or school being called off- and also Spring Break to take into account for (unless that already passed.. this semester is flying by super quick!)

These past weeks we talked about various HTML / CSS techniques via powerpoints before applying them to our own coding. We also had our pre-critique for our Experimental Project. Mine went pretty well. For the most part my experimental type is good in terms of how it looks! Now I'm just tackling After Effects and hoping to goodness I'll be able to get somewhere with it. I don't think it should be that hard, and I'm pretty tech savvy I think when it comes to learning new things, so I think I'll be okay. If I can get myself dedicated to working and looking at stuff for it this upcoming week since I have other projects that are beginning to co exist with this one, I should be okay.

We turned in our posters for the South by South-West, and for the most part I think I finished pretty strongly with my piece. Other than those major things, I don't really think anything else really has happened that I'm missing. This upcoming week we will be figuring out who is in our CSS / HTML group for our final web project involving code.

Lesson 10, 11, and 12 with HTML / CSS

Class was cancelled for Thursday, so we were given three assignments due for Tuesday's class with HTML and CSS.

Here are my asignments:

Lesson 10:

Lesson 11:

I decided to go with a blueberry pie kind of theme, mostly because I love the color blue. Hopefully it's not too much of an eye sore.

Lesson 12:

Lesson 9 using HTML / CSS

At first my code wasn't working in terms of the fonts, and I think that's because it can't take any under dashes as part of the font's name because I was able to get two out of my three chosen fonts I had thought about using. Here's my code and my screen shot of my final webpage:

^ this one was just for fun. I liked the font for my h1 but it was definitely not compatible with my h2 chosen font for the titles of the movies. The title of the movies went well I feel with all of my georgia text. For the most part the title was just for fun.

this is the final with what I wanted to choose in terms of just sticking with one font. I think it worked very well and provides movement and appealment with the title terms, and it doesn't stand too too far out along with Georgia as the body font and my all caps date line.

This is the code with my included fonts (one of which I didn't use in the end)

Design Weekend March 28th

This past weekend we had a guest speaker named Jimmy Gownley, who is an accomplished comic book creator along with having experience in graphic design and motion graphics. He gave a very motivational speech to us on Saturday. He told us a lot of things that I've already heard from other speakers who share the same kind of 'luck' so to speak. Some of it is luck, others are having strong networking connections, while other times it's just constant perseverence and applying for anything to everything you can find that is in your field. It was very inspirational, and it kind of made me a little bit refreshed and eye opening to the fact that I can do this. There are things I may not be perfectly good at, but I can still create something that no one else has that can  be highly successful. It all depends on who to contact, who to keep in touch with, and just again- networking. I feel like I need to start working toward a portfolio. I have things in general, I have a variety of things mixing between animations, graphics, design, and so on. I guess diversity is okay, but I am uncertain if I really should have much diversity in my portfolio- if it's not top quality compared to what my peers both designers and non designers see versus the big guys.

I'm thinking about next semester to have a critique of my work- because I had had one last semester but it wasn't very eye opening at all and not too much advice was given to me in terms of what I had and what I could do to utilize it well. Half of that though may be because I signed up for the wrong person.

Experimental Project Progress 1

Working on the experimental type, I have had two approaches to it. The first approach was to envision what animals I could use to my advantage in order to create the alphabet. I knew that I would have a little bit of flexibility, since they are animals morphed and shaped into the letter itself. The only problem that I had was how exactly to create them? At first I dove into using the "fontographer" block as a reference mark for how big I should make each letter and where all the landmarks were in terms of footers, line height and so on.

Realizing that it was making my life harder, I decided to go ahead and find an already made font and make several layers of the entire alphabet within that block. From there I would trace over the letter with my own animal creation.

Here is what I have so far. I'm starting to go back and really outline and bring out shapes and forms with thickened lines. It's starting to lean toward a little bit of tribal-esque, but I'm trying to correct that as best I can. I have some alternations I want to push ahead with- that being to maybe have it be colored / keep it tribal like / motif style / keep the animal form as best as possible so people don't get confused to what it is. I think for right now it's a good beginning, because each letter can easily be seen as to what they are.

Edit Update 3/31/15:

This is where I am currently at now!

I've been trying to keep myself along with the theme of aztec / mayan motifs, but a little bit of tribal has seemed to come into play- which isn't a bad thing! I feel some letters are stronger than others, and I want to keep trying to have a diversity of bold lines and thicknesses, compared to the photos I've provided previously. I've also tried to make sure that the animals and the differences between black and white correspond with what they actually look like and represent.

I'm also still debating about color- but for right now I'm content with the letters and how they are so I can be prepared to dedicate myself to After Affects.
